Edward J. Waring Safety Award

Presented To: Paul Jung, CIH, CSP, RRPT
Presented By: Western New York Safety Conferences

Sevenson’s Director of Health and Safety, Paul Jung, CIH, CSP, RRPT, is this year’s Edward J. Waring Award winner. This award is presented to a member of the Western New York Safety Conference who exhibits distinguished service in the field of occupational health and safety.

Mr. Jung has more than 30 years of experience developing and implementing corporate and site-specific health and safety plans on Sevenson’s environmental remediation projects. On these projects, our job site personnel handle, process, and dispose of chemical, radiological, and hazardous waste. Paul currently manages a staff of 48 safety professionals at Sevenson who are assigned to company projects across the country. Additionally, he facilitates a focus group comprised of safety professionals within the company which review and evaluate implementing new health and safety initiatives and technologies on jobsites. Mr. Jung visits jobsites regularly to conduct routine safety inspections and audits; works with each on-site safety professional individually to determine jobsite needs relative to personnel health and safety; and conducts Activity Hazard Analysis (AHAs) on field operations. His dedication to safety ensures that everyone on a Sevenson project returns home safely at the end of each shift.

Paul is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Western New York Safety Conference and is a Past President.

About The Edward J. Waring Award and the Western New York Safety Conference

The Edward J. Waring Award was instituted in 1935 with the formation of the Western New York Safety Conference. The mission of the group is to openly exchange information, share programs, and expand the knowledge of the health and safety professionals who come together from a diverse group of businesses and industries to collaborate on occupational health and safety issues to lessen jobsite injuries in the workplace. The Western New York Safety Conference has made significant contributions to the advancement of safety, health, and environment for both workers and the public.

The award is presented to an individual who has had a significant career in health and safety, has been involved with a variety of organizations as a representative to promote the art and science of accident/injury reduction, and is a mentor to young professionals in the field of health and safety. Awardees are active in their local communities. They are truly Health and Professional Safety “Leaders”!

2024 Excellence in Environmental Engineering and Science™ Awards

Grand Prize – Industrial Waste Practice

Presented To: Aponowich, Driscoll & Associates, Inc. with Sevenson Environmental Services, Inc. (Contractor/Operator)
Presented By: American Academy of Environmental Engineers Scientists

ADA and Sevenson Environmental Services (contractor) have been working on the NW Natural Gas site in Portland Oregon since 2008 on an extensive remediation project, removing pollutants from the site being discharged into the Willamette River via groundwater.

In 2020 and 2021, it was determined that the groundwater flow patterns had changed over 8 years of operation. Additional measures were necessary to prevent this groundwater source from reaching the river. This groundwater showed much higher pollutant levels than existing flows. A new pretreatment system was required to collect and treat the so-called “Interceptor Trench” groundwater. The new system would then be tied into the existing Pretreatment Plant and ultimately pumped to the Main Treatment Plant for further treatment and final discharge.

Key Takeaways from the project are:

  • Alternative air stripping methods were not deemed to be feasible due to the iron fouling which would occur.
  • While diffused-air type air strippers are relatively rare and their performance not extensively documented, the Interceptor Trench unit has shown that, properly designed, a diffused air system can produce remarkable organics removal results, even with high solids in the wastewater.
  • The iron in the groundwater was oxidized effectively and used as a no-cost method of removing heavy metals.
  • The higher-than predicted removal of semi-volatile PAHs in the diffused-air unit has doubled the life of the liquid phase activated carbon system downstream.
  • Since the Interceptor Trench project was commissioned, it has intercepted and successfully treated over 150 million gallons of polluted groundwater.
  • The plant discharge to the Willamette River has continually met the NPDES standards, many of which are below drinking water standards. The NPDES permit limits are summarized in a following section.
