Prior to 1973 most of Sevenson’s demolition work was small-scale commercial and industrial projects tied to plant renovations or expansions in and around Niagara Falls, NY. In 1973, a major earthquake destroyed approximately 400 acres of structures in Managua, Nicaragua, and Sevenson was awarded a contract to decontaminate, demolish and dispose of structures identified as dangerous or uninhabitable. Work continued until 1979, when the Nicaraguan government was overthrown and Sevenson was forced to cease operations and leave the country. During its six years in Nicaragua, Sevenson demolished hundreds of masonry, steel, stone, and concrete structures.
