South Kearny, New Jersey
The Syncon Resins Superfund Site is located in a heavily industrialized section of South Kearny, New Jersey. The 15-acre facility formerly manufactured alkyd resin carriers for pigments, paints, and varnish products. The site consisted of reactor buildings, aboveground storage tanks (ASTs), unlined lagoons, and piping infrastructure. These operations contaminated the area’s groundwater, soil, and building structures. COCs included VOCs, SVOCs, TPHs, PCBs, pesticides, ACM, and metals, including lead, cadmium, arsenic and chromium.
As the self-performing prime contractor, Sevenson’s scope of work included utility work; an asbestos abatement; demolition of 14 multi-story buildings, totaling 63,000 SF of hazardous material; and the removal of multiple aboveground storage tanks. Following demolition, crews excavated and transported and disposed of 49,745 CY of impacted soils; and site restoration. Sevenson designed, constructed, operated, and maintained a 150-GPM temporary WWTP, which treated and discharged >2.5M gallons of water.
